will find the comfort, and the benefit following such measures; so that what at first was
unwillingly and grudgingly complied with, will in the end be done cheerfully and voluntarily.
The consumers of milk will also come in for a share of the good; for it was in
possible that the milk of cows kept as they formerly were, could possess those sweet and
nutritive qualities essential to it. The sheds were most foul, and neglected, and the cows
covered with their own droppings; this certainly must have affected their health, and if
their health, then the milk which they produced. But towns are not fit places for the
keeping of cows, as they are crowded too much together, besides being kept in their stalls
from the time they enter, until they are taken out to be killed. Their food is not that which
is most suitable for continued health, but that which will aid, by its stimulating qualities,
to yield the most milk. There were at the time of our visit 215 cows, one bull, and one calf.
