The number of Nursery Classes in the Borough increased from 25 to 35 in
1970.
With the opening of a Partially hearing Unit at John Ruskin School in 1970,
the number of Partially Hearing Units in the Borough was increased to 2.
Medical Inspections
There was a total of 18,069 Routine Medical Inspections, during 1970, of
Southwark school children. These routine Medical Inspections are carried out at
least four times in each pupil's school life: at entry into Infant School, Junior
School, Secondary School and also in the last year at School.
Children in Nursery Schools are seen annually.
In addition to Routine Medical Inspections, there were 11,960 re-inspections
and other Non-routine Medicals carried out. These are arranged at the request of
Medical Officers, Headteachers, School Nurses, the Divisional Education Welfare
Officer, or parents.
Children on the Observation and Handicapped Register are seen at regular
intervals and their educational requirements are re-assessed accordingly.
