REMOVAL OF THE REMAINS OF DECEASED PERSONS
Towards the end of 1967, and in accordance with the Town and Country Planning
(Churches, Places or Religious Worship and Burial Grounds) Regulations, 1950, arrangements
were made for the removal of the remains of deceased persons to the Southwark
Old Cemetery, Forest Hill Road, S.E.23. from part of the Mayflower Garden Burial
Ground which had been earmarked as a site for future road works.
A total of 4,397 human remains, estimated to be about 200 years old, were removed
from Mayflower Gardens and generally no identification was possible except for
those contained in nine lead coffins found in two vaults on the site.
The handling and casing of the remains was done in a conscientious manner by
representatives of the Undertaker who were on site during all working hours, and daily
visits were made by representatives of the Greater London Council and the excavating
Contractor.
The work was carried out under the constant supervision of the Public Health
Inspector and was completed on 15 February 1968.
