SANITARY CIRCUMSTANCES OP THE AREA.
The water carriage system is universal in Southwark, and neither
earth closets nor cesspools are used. The scavenging is carried out by
the Borough Engineer's Department, who remove the refuse twice a week
or oftener if necessary. As a rule covered inetal movable bins are in use,
but in some blocks of dwellings dust shoots with fixed bins at the bottom
are used. This is especially the case in high buildings where the carrying
of the bins would be difficult. The refuse is either railed straight to a
country depot, or ground in a machine to a powder which is used for
manurial purposes.
