BIRTHS.
The number of Births registered in the Borough during 1906 was
6,079, of which 3,131 were males, and 2,948 females. This represents a
birth-rate of 29'1 per 1,000 inhabitants.
The number of births in the individual parishes was 3,591 in Newington,
1,891 in St. George the Martyr, 253 in Christchurch and 344 in
St. Saviour's.
In addition to the 6,079 births registered in the Borough I learn from
the Registrar General that there were 146 births during the year in
various lying-in institutions outside the Borough belonging to persons
resident in Southwark, and this number (146) must be added to the total
as above, making the actual number of births for the year 6,225, which
