PUBLIC HEALTH ACT.
During 1906, 117 summonses were taken out against owners of
property and other persons for contraventions of the Public Health Act
and By-Laws made thereunder. The following table shows the number
of summonses taken out in the several wards:—

These summonses had reference to the following:—
Ordinary Nuisances 97

Permitting new premises to be occupied without first
obtaining certificate under Section 48 (as to
proper water supply) 3
Premises foul and dilapidated 1
Obstructing an Inspector 1
Selling Ice Cream from barrow on which the Vendor's
name and address were not exhibited 1
Removing meat refuse in an unsuitable van 1
Overcrowding 1
Disobedience of Magistrate's order 1

Total 117
Of these 117 summonses 60 were withdrawn, as follows In 56
cases, the nuisances complained of were abated, in 3 cases the premises
complained of were stated to be about to be pulled down, and in .1 case
the insanitary condition complained of was stated to be due to an alleged
defect in the Council's street gully. Of the remaining 57 summonses,
penalties were inflicted in 20 cases. Magistrates' orders were made in
33 cases, the premises were ordered to be closed in 1 case, 2 summonses
were adjourned sine die, and one summons was dismissed (see pages 122
and 129.)
