PUBLIC HEALTH ACT.
During 1905, 99 summonses were taken out against owners of
property and other persons for contraventions of the Public Health Act
and By-Laws made thereunder. The following table shows the number
of summonses taken out in the several Wards:—

These summonses had reference to the following:—

Of these 99 summonses 49 were withdrawn, as follows In 44 cases
the nuisances complained of were abated, in 2 cases the Council's
sewer and not the house drain was found to be in fault, and in three
cases it was shewn that the summonses had been issued against a
company instead of against an individual member of the same. Of the
remaining 50 summonses, 5 were superseded by others taken out under
the Housing of the Working Classes Act, 1890. Magistrates' orders were
made in 10 cases, without penalties. Pines were inflicted in 26 cases.
7 summonses were dismissed and 2 were adjourned sine die.
