LOCALITY OF BIRTHS.
Information as to registered births is now sent on weekly to the
medical officers of health by the district sub-registrars. It is hardly to
be expected that the machinery for the proper and full use of this
information will be set up at once, that must come by degrees, but I have
no doubt that before long the excessive infantile mortality will receive
much more attention than it has hitherto had. For the present, on receipt
of the weekly returns of births we deliver into the hands of the individual
mothers printed directions, "How to feed and bring up a Baby.'' There
are as well, two lady inspectors, part of whose duty it is to make
inquiries in relation to infants.
