PUBLIC HEALTH ACT.
During 1904, 157 summonses were taken out against owners of
property and other persons for contraventions of the Public Health Act
and By-Laws made thereunder. The following table shows the number
of summonses taken out in the several Wards:—

70 of these summonses were withdrawn, in 6S instances the nuisances
complained of having been abated, in one instance the defect in a drain
in question being found to exist at a house other than the one for which
the summons was taken out, and in one instance the summons was withdrawn
upon a technical point raised on behalf of the defendant.
Magistrates' orders were made in 34 instances with penalties against the
defendants, and in 16 instances without penalties. Defendants were fined
in 29 instances. A closing order was made in one instance, one summons
was adjourned sine die. Three summonses were dismissed, and three
were not served owing to the persons against whom they were issued
having gone away.
