PARK STREET AREA.
Representation of the Park Street Area under the Housing of the
Working Classes Act, 1890, made by the Medical Officer of Health of the
Borough to the London County Council.
4th June, 1903.
PARK STREET AREA.
Dear Sir,
I beg to report that the houses, courts, and alleys marked on the
plan previously submitted are unfit for human habitation owing to the
narrowness, closeness, and bad arrangement of the houses, courts, and
alleys within such area, whereby there is a want of proper light, air, and
ventilation for the said houses. These defects which are set out in a
detailed report which you have received, are dangerous or injurious to the
health of the inhabitants of the buildings of the said area. The facts in
support of this representation may be summarised as follows:—
(а) Defective light in nearly all the ground floor rooms owing to
the narrowness of the Courts and the high walls of the
adjacent factories.
(b) Defective air and ventilation owing to the closeness and bad
arrangement of the houses, and the narrowness of the Courts.
(c) The dampness of the site.
(d) The high mortality from all diseases among the residents of the
area.
(e) The high mortality from infectious diseases, especially from
Phthisis, in the area.
I am, Dear Sir,
Yours faithfully,
G. L. Gomme, Esq., (Signed) G. B. MILLSON.
Clerk, London County Council.
