PUBLIC HEALTH ACT.
During the year it was found necessary to take legal proceedings in
the Police Courts in 329 instances in order to enforce compliance with
the Council's notices. The following table shows the number of summonses
taken out in each of the Wards:—

These summonses had reference to the following:—
Nuisances 266
Contraventions of London County Council's By-Laws 46
Unsound Food 1
Smoke Nuisances 9
Disobedience of Magistrates' Orders 2
Refusing admission to Council's Inspector 1
Selling Ice Cream from barrow on which the Vendor's
name and address were not exhibited 4
Total 329
Of these 329 summonses 196 were withdrawn, in 192 instances the
nuisances complained of having been abated, and in 4 cases the premises
having been sold subsequent to the commencement of the proceedings.
Magistrates' Orders were made in 6 instances with penalties against the
owners, and in 27 instances without penalties. The defendants were
fined for non-compliance with the Council's notices in 94 instances.
Prohibition orders were made in regard to 2 cases, a warrant to enter
was granted in 1 instance, and a closing order made in 1, 1 summons
has not been served—a false address having been given to the inspector,
and the hearing of 1 case had been adjourned at the end of the year.
