SMOKE NUISANCES.
During the year 1903 97 complaints were received at the Public
Health Office from persons other than the Council's inspectors. No less
than 19 of these complaints had reference to the shaft of the laundry belonging
to Guy's hospital, and it became necessary to take out summonses
respect to four of the nuisances at this institution reported by the Ward
Inspector. The Governors of Guy's hospital were fined £10 and 4s. costs,
£1 and 2s. costs, and ordered to pay costs in respect to a third summons.
A Prohibition order was made in regard to the fourth nuisance
complained of to the magistrate.
Three summonses were taken out against the City of London Electric
Lighting Company Limited, in respect to nuisances from the shafts of
their works in Bankside. The defendants were fined £5 and 2s. costs on
each of two summonses, and £10 and 12s. 6d. costs in respect to a third,
(making £20 16s. 6d. in all).
Mr. G. Schlotze, of 111, Portland Street, was fined £3 and 2s. costs,
for allowing black smoke to be emitted from his bakehouse chimney.
The Tandem Smelting Syndicate were fined £3 and 2s. costs for
allowing the emission of black smoke from the shaft of their factory in
Green Street.
