DIARRHŒA.
The deaths during the year from this disease were 169, as against
222 for 1901, and 233 for 1900. This decrease in the mortality must be
considered as due to the comparatively cold summers of the last two
years.
The annual rate per 1,000 living was .81.
Deaths from Diarrhea during the last ten years:—
1893 214 1898 306
1894 96 1899 260
1895 205 1900 233
1896 214 1901 222
1897 300 1902 169
In the case of every death from Diarrhoea the house was examined,
and the history of the circumstances of the case fully reported upon.
PHTHISIS.
The deaths from Phthisis during the year were 550, as against 516
for 1901.
The annual rate per 1,000 living was 2.65.
Deaths from Phthisis during the last nine years:—
1894 473 1899 621
1895 533 1900 571
1896 490 1901 516
1897 520 1902 550
1898 565
During the last seven years it has been our practice to visit, and
examine every house in which a person has died from Phthisis.
Disinfection of rooms now takes place in all deaths from that complaint,
and weekly in all cases treated at home.
Voluntary Notification of Phthisis.
The voluntary notification of Phthisis has been in vogue in this
Borough since the latter part of 1901. Owing to the increased work
consequent on the epidemic of Small-pox, this notification was somewhat
neglected during the year now under consideration.
At the latter part of the year it was decided to arrange a Conference
between the Public Health Committee, and the medical men practising in
the Borough in order to discuss the best means for preventing the spread
of Phthisis.
