considerable research but in view of the particular nature of the nuisance in the
middle reaches and its relationship to sulphates, the discharge of large amounts
of effluents containing these substances should be excluded from the river. From
the point of view of the Clean Air Act owing to the relatively inefficient removal
of sulphur from flue gases by the methods and equipment at present installed at
the two Power Stations on the river, this, for an experimental period could well
be stopped, as the gases discharged contain an excess of water which on evaporation
so cools the plumes that they are rapidly brought to ground level and in so
doing bring down the residual sulphur in solution in a most deleterious form,
which is a factor in the increased rates of corrosion noted, whereas discharge of
hot gases containing sulphur dioxide retain sufficient buoyancy to permit the sulphur
dioxide to remain gaseous and to be diluted in the upper atmosphere, thus
lessening the concentration and hence the corrosion at ground level due to higher
concentration of these oxides in solution in a washed plume.
