Inspection of Schools.
The public elementary schools were inspected during the year. A
few minor defects were discovered and reported to the London County
Council.
There is only one private school in the Borough.
The accommodation was satisfactory and the sanitary arrangements
sufficient and kept in a cleanly state.
Rag Flock Act, 1911.
21 samples were taken. 15 samples were satisfactory, and 6 did
not comply with the prescribed standard of cleanliness. Legal proceedings
were taken in 3 cases for being in possession of the rag flock
and in one case for selling, and letters of caution were sent in 2 other
cases. No action was taken in the sixth case, the excess of chlorine
being very slight.
Rags—Certificates.
At the request of a certain firm dealing in wiping rags, certificates
that the rags have undergone a cleansing process are issued after inspection
by an officer of the department. A fee of £5 5s. is paid for inspection
and the granting of certificates up to 70, with an additional is. 6d. for
each certificate in excess of that number. During the year 170 certificates
were issued.
Hairdressers' Premises.
The number of inspections of hairdressers' premises was 83.
Cleansing was necessary at 2 of the premises, and other nuisances found
numbered 4. Five intimations and 3 notices were served. The requirements
of these documents were complied with.
Canal Boats.
It has been mentioned in previous reports that the old type of canal
boat is seen but infrequently on the canals in this Borough. Only one
such boat was seen in 1936, and this could not be inspected as there was
nobody on board and the cabin was locked.
During the year visits were paid to the canals and locks, but the
traffic consisted of non-residential "dumb" barges.
Exhumations.
Two notices of exhumation were received.
