Swimming Baths and Pools.
It was mentioned in last year's Annual Report that, following upon
the issue of the Ministry of Health Circular 1503, arrangements were
being made with the London County Council for the bacteriological
examination of water from the swimming baths in the Borough, including
the London County Council Open Air Bath at Millwall. In July, 1936,
an agreement was entered into with the London County Council for the
bacteriological examination of 25 samples each year at the Group
Laboratory, Mile End Hospital, at an annual charge of £65. Only £10
of this sum (in respect of samples taken from the London County Council
Open Air Bath) is chargeable to the Public Health Committee—the balance
is a charge to the Baths Committee.
The samples are collected and examined by the Bacteriologist in
charge of the Group Laboratory, Mile End. During the year, 14 samples
of bath water were taken and examined as follows:—
East India Dock Road—1st class Bath 2 samples-
t
East India Dock Road—2nd class Bath 3 samples.
Roman Road—1st class Bath 2 samples.
Roman Road—2nd class Bath 3 samples.
Glengall Road Bath samples.
Violet Road Open Air Bath 1 sample.
Millwall Open Air Bath (London County Council)1 sample.
The Bacteriologist reported that from the bacteriological point of
view the results were very satisfactory. In no case was B.coli detected
in 5 c.c. of bath water. B.Welchii was present on two occasions, but
in view of the ubiquitous nature of this organism, and the fact that being
a spore bearer it resists chlorination, its presence is now and again to
be expected. The specimens were taken from about two inches below
the surface, three-quarters of the way down the bath, towards the deep
end.
Reports regarding the Poplar Baths were sent to the Baths
Superintendent for the information of the Baths Committee, and
a copy of the report regarding the London County Council Open Air Bath
was sent to the Chief Officer of the Parks Department, London County
Council.
