The Maternity and Child Welfare work is divided between the
Borough Council and the Royal College of St. Katharine, the Borough
Council taking approximately the areas north of Bow Road and south of

Ministry of Health Circular 1550—Children under School Age.
Under date 29th May, 1936, the Ministry of Health addressed a
Circular to all Maternity and Child Welfare Authorities (England) regarding
the health of young children between the ages of 18 months and

The Circular asked the Council to review their arrangements for
supervising the health of young children and inform him as soon as
possible of the result of their consideration of the Circular.
The Medical Officer of Health submitted a report detailing the
services already available in the Borough and making certain recommendations.
The Council, upon the recommendation of the Maternity Committee,
agreed that in the financial estimates for the year 1937 provision be
made for an additional Health Visitor for work on the Isle of Dogs and
the institution of two additional Infant Welfare sessions, one at Simpsons
Road and the other at 54, West Ferry Road. It was also agreed that
when the new Old Ford Clinic is established, two further Infant Welfare
sessions be introduced and an additional Health Visitor be appointed
for work in the Bow area.
A copy of the Medical Officer of Health's report was sent to the
Ministry of Health with an assurance that the needs of the toddlers would
receive the continued attention of the Council.
