Dripping.
In November, a vendor was summoned at the Thames Police Court,
and fined .£5 with 2 guineas costs, for selling dripping containing 1.1
per cent. excess of fatty acids and being coloured with an organic dye.
Enquiries made by the Food Inspectors revealed the fact that fat not sold
as "edible" was purchased from fat melters, manipulated, sophisticated,
and then supplied to shopkeepers as dripping. Consequent upon this
disclosure the Council resolved that the Ministry of Health be urged to
promote legislation to the following effect:—
(1) Dripping should be defined as the fat which drops from meat
in roasting.
(2) The standard for fatty acids in edible fats and dripping should
be specified.
(3) An officer of a local authority who is authorised to procure
samples under the Sale of Food and Drugs Acts, shall, if
specially authorised in that behalf by the local authority, have
powers of entry, inspection and sampling as regards any
premises where dripping or edible fats are prepared or manipulated
or stored.
(4) If any person wilfully neglects or refuses to obey or carry
out, or obstructs, he shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding
£100, and, in the case of a continuing offence, to a further
penalty not exceeding £50 for every day during which the
offence continues.
