Two tuberculosis patients who died were not notified (1.0 per cent.
of the total deaths from tuberculosis), and thirteen other cases were
notified only after death.
X-Ray Apparatus.—In the early part of the year the Dispensary
X-ray apparatus was overhauled and made to comply with the requirements
of the National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, at a cost of a
little over £100.
Motor Vehicles.—The horse-driven disinfecting vans have been
superseded by two motors (Morris Standard Vans). Previously a horse
was hired daily. The old vans had been in use for over 30 years, and
were nearing the end of their tether. A one-ton (Morris) lorry has also
been purchased for delivering electrolytic disinfectant from the Dep6t
to the distributing centres. This replaces the arrangement of hiring a
horse and van.
Removal of human bodies from foreshore.—During the year, the
arrangements as to removal of human bodies cast ashore from any of
the tidal waters belonging to the Borough were reviewed and, after
advertising, the tender of a local undertaker to remove any such body at
any time, and also if necessary to remove bodies of persons dying in their
homes from an infectious disease, to the Council's Mortuary, for a flat
rate of £2 per body was accepted.
Verminous Second-hand. Bedding.—On account of complaints as to
the sale from stalls of dirty and filthy second-hand bedding, the Council
suggested to the London County Council that powers be obtained to deal
with such nuisances.
Education and Propaganda.—Two film displays upon public health
matters (arranged by the British Social Hygiene Council) were given
during March—one each at the Town Hall, Poplar and Bow Baths.
During the evenings of September 28th and 29th, four outdoor film
displays were given through the kindness of the Bermondsey Borough
Council. These were followed by a three-days' Health Exhibition and
series of lectures and film displays in the Poplar Town Hall. During the
three days, talks were given to approximately 1,200 senior schoolchildren.
The speakers at the open public meetings included Lady Barrett
("Ante-Natal Care"), Dr. C. W. Saleeby ("Sunlight and Health"), Dr.
