Regulations. A copy has been sent to all medical practitioners in the
Borough, and I trust there will be no cause for drastic action in this
district.
Trachoma.—After consultation with the London County Council
Divisional Medical Officer, a number of cases were visited. It came to
my notice during the year that many persons with trachoma were leaving
this district for fruit and hop.picking. I communicated the facts to
the Ministry of Health, who took up the matter of precautionary
measures with the various local authorities.
Public Analyst.—The Public Analyst's report in connection with
the Sale of Food and Drugs Acts, etc., is given in full.
Maternity and Child Welfare.—The mortality rate amongst infants
visited was 44. Reports of the Chief Health Visitor, the Senior Medical
Officer of the Royal College of St. Katherine, and the Council's Dental
Surgeon will be found in the section of the report relating to Maternity
and Child Welfare work.
It has been necessary to revise the areas covered by the Health
Visitors, and an additional appointment has been made.
Artificial sunlight treatment has been administered to a number
of children; the results are very encouraging. Pending permanent
arrangements, temporary accommodation is being rented for more extensive
treatment.
An Ante.natal Clinic was commenced in October, at 134 , High
Street, Poplar. Plans have been prepared and submitted to the Ministry
of Health for the erection of a more commodious and up.to.date clinic at
the rear of Nos. 134 and 13C, High Street, Poplar. There are also in
preparation plans for Observation Wards to be erected in the grounds
of No. 1, Wellington Road. Provision will be made for Maternity and
Child Welfare Clinics, also a Dental Clinic, and accommodation for
artificial.light treatment.
Electrolytic Disinfecting Fluid.—On account of the increasing demand
for the fluid, consideration is being given for the demolition of
the existing wooden structure, and the erection of a more extensive solid
building, and the installation of additional plant.
Propaganda.—During the year, film displays on matters of public
health were given at the Town Hall, Poplar, and at the Bow Baths. The
display in April was for women only, and that in October for men only;
other displays in February and December being open for both sexes.
