An addition has been made to ihe dispensary staS by the appointment
of a Care Secretary, to act specially as secretary to the Care Committee
and to undertake generally the duties arising in connection 'with
the care and after care of patients and their families. Miss Nugent,
who was appointed on 24/1/24, commenced her duties on 1/3/24.
Twenty-three meetings of the Care Committee were held during 1924,
and 482 cases were deajt with. 175 recommendations in connection with
assessment for residential treatment were forwarded to the London
County Council. The Committee has worked in close touch with the
Invalid Children's Aid Association, the Poplar Board of Guardians, the
Ked Cross Society, the United Services Fund, and other societies.
Assistance in the form of the provision of dentures free of charge
(one case), the loan of beds and bedding (two cases), and the provision
of a shelter has been given by the Borough Council on the Committee's
recommendation.
The Poplar Guardians have provided dentures in 11 cases, and beds
and bedding in 6 cases recommended by the Committee. They have also
given general assistance and extra nourishment in the many cases
referred to them.
The Red Cross Society has given valuable help in connection with
tuberculous ex-Servicemen (including financial assistance, beds, dentures,
clothing, etc.), and has also undertaken, for the Committee, all
investigations regarding pensions.
The United Services Fund has given assistance to ex-Service men s
families.
The Invalid Children's Aid Association has undertaken all the visiting
for the Committee in connection with tuberculous children, and also
the children's convalescence.
The finding of employment for ex-sanatorium patients is, perhaps,
the most difficult aspect of the Committee's work. Employment w'as
found for three cases through the Committee's efforts during 1924.
