MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH.

Borough of Poplar.
Sir, Ladies and Gentlemen,
In accordance with the "Sanitary Officers' (London) Order, 1891,"
of the Local Government Board, dated 8th December, 1891, I have the
pleasure of submitting to you my twenty-ninth Annual Report, which
deals with the year 1921. The reports of the Tuberculosis Officer, the
Chief Health Visitor, and the Clinic Dental Surgeon are appended, but
those of the Sanitary Inspectors have not been printed, the work as far
as possible being shown in tabulated form.
VITAL STATISTICS.
The population of the Borough, estimated to the middle of the
year by the Registrar General is 164,100:—
London. Poplar. Bromley. Bow.
4,514,405 57,470 66,020 40,610
being 70.49 per acre for the Borough of Poplar. 49.27 per acre in Poplar
Sub-District, 108.97 in Bromley, and 73.07 in Bow.* These estimated
populations are the figures used in calculating the various rates in the present
Report.
CENSUS.
The population of the Borough at the time of the Census (June,
1921) was as follows:—Poplar sub-district, 56,924; Bromley, 65,441;
Bow, 40,253; Borough, 162,618.
* These figures are calculated upon the acreage of the district including the inland
water area, not tidal and foreshore, Exclusive of area covered by water they are:—
76.82 per acre for the Borough of Poplar, 57.24 for the Sub-District of Poplar, 112.08
for the Sub-District of Bromley, and 74.78 for the Sub-District of Bow. County of
London 60.0 (Census 1911).
