The Notification of Births (Extension) Act, 1915, enables Metropolitan
Borough Councils to provide the services of a Doctor when called in
by a Midwife, and the Local Government Board is prepared to make a
grant of half of the amount of fees paid by Local Authorities to Doctors
attending cases of necessitous women. The Council was urged to make
suitable arrangements of the character indicated.
The Public Health and Housing Committee were of opinion arrangements
should be made, and directed the Medical Officer to ascertain
the conditions under which local medical practit'oners would be prepared
to attend when required in case of emergency. The Committee,
however, thought the whole cost of Doctors' fees in such cases should be
refunded by the Local Government Board and recommended the Council
that necessary arrangements be made for payment of the fees of doctors
called in by midwives in an emergency in necessitous cases, and that the
Local Government Board be urged to refund the whole of the amount
of such fees.
The Committee agreed to a scale of fees to Medical Practitionrs
called in by a Midwife in case of emergency in necessitous cases.
