Housing of the Working Classes Act, 1890, Section 30—
Bird-in-Hand Court; Coventry Cross Place; "Black
Beetle Alley"; Amendment of the definition of
Owner; Conference on Town Planning; Housing, Town
Planning, etc., Act, 1909.
Housing of the Working Classes Act, 1890, Section 30—
Bird-in-hand Court.
Representations were made under Section 30 of the Housing of the
Working Classes Act, 1890, that Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, Bird-in-hand
Court were in such a state as to be dangerous or injurious to health, and
unfit for human habitation. The Public Health and Housing Committee
approved the service upon the owner of statutory notices that in default of
the houses being made fit for human habitation within 14 days, legal
proceedings would be taken to obtain closing orders. The Committee
directed proceedings for closing orders be taken, in default, and application
made to the Court for authority to pay the tenants of the houses reasonable
allowances on account of their expenses of removal, such amount to be
recovered from the owner by the Council.
The Council approved the action of the Committee.
Notices were served upon the owner, the houses were vacated by the
tenants and the premises were made fit for human habitation. There was
no need to institute legal proceedings.
