Proposed issuing of Regulations under Section 4 of the
Sale of Food and Drugs Act, 1899, with regard to
Cheese.
The following letter was submitted to the Public Health and Housing
Committee:—
Battersea Borough Council,
Town Hall, Battersea, S.W.,
29th December, 1909.
Dear Sir,
My Council have had under consideration the question of the
sale of cheese deficient in fat, and have recently caused samples to
be taken and submitted to the Public Analyst for analysis.
Some of the samples in question have been certified to be
deficient in fat to a considerable extent, and it is felt that proceedings
should be instituted against the vendors. The Council
are, however, faced by the difficulty that there is at present no
official standard fixing a minimum limit for the quantity of fat
which cheeses of different kinds should contain.
In view of the circumstances, it appears to the Council to be
useless to take proceedings in such cases as it is very doubtful
whether the Council would obtain convictions in the absence of
official standards or minimum limits such as those referred to.
I have, therefore, by direction of the Council, addressed a letter
to the Board of Agriculture and Fisheries drawing their attention
to the matter and asking that the Board will be good enough to
consider as to issuing Regulations under Section 4 of the Sale of
Food and Drugs Act, 1899, with regard to cheese.
In the event of your Council concurring I am directed to ask
that they will kindly support the action of my Council in the
matter.
Yours faithfully,
W. MARCUS WILKINS,
Town Clerk.
The Town Clerk, Poplar.
