With reference to food stuffs exported to foreign countries, viz., the
Philippine Islands (where certificates were required to accompany each
consignment from the Sanitary Authority of the district whence the
goods were dispatched), the premises were visited and the factory
inspected and the goods examined and reported satisfactory before the
certificates were signed by yourself.
Sufferance Wharf and Food Preserving and Manufacturing Premises (for
export only), West Ferry Road, Millwall.
These premises were frequently visited and all unsound food stuffs,
suspicious or blown tinned foods (sorted from imported stock) were
destroyed by the firm.
Summary of food stuffs examined and destroyed:-
70 cases tinned fish, mixed, principally lobster, salmon and
sardines, about 50 tins per case.
469 tins mixed goods, fish and vegetables.
15 tins meat.
53 tins vegetables.
2 tons ½ cwt. of lemon skins.
25 cases of fish paste, previously condemned at the docks, were
permitted by the Port Sanitary Authority to be delivered at the above
premises for examination. On the application of the firm to yourself,
permission was also given for the further removal of the goods to their
factory at Lowestoft, and the medical officer of that district was notified
of their despatch.
Frequent exportations from this factory of consignments of hams or
tinned meat to the Argentine or Philippines (where a certificate is
required from the Sanitary Authority of the district whence the goods
are despatched to accompany each consignment) had occurred.
In every instance the factory had been visited and the goods examined
before the certificates were signed.
The additional powers conferred by the Regulations under the Public
Health Regulations as to Food Act, 1907, will greatly facilitate in future
a more rigid inspection of food stuffs landed at the above-mentioned
wharves, and a more effectual means of dealing with and disposing of
unsound food is defined in that statute.
