SEWERAGE, DRAINAGE AND SEWER
VENTILATION.
Hutchings Wharf; Rigden Street; Sewer Ventilation, Proposed
Shafts Northern Outfall; Flooding, Severe Storm.
In the memorandum issued by the Local Government Board to the
Medical Officers of Health respecting their Animal Reports, it is stated
that the Local Government Board desired to obtain, through the Annual
Reports of the Medical Officers of Health, information of particular
changes of condition that occur by the action of the Local Authority, and
one of the subject matters which is required to be reported upon is the
condition of sewer and house drains.
Hutchings Wharf.
The Borough Surveyor reported that an old brick sewer at Hutchings
Wharf, Hutchings Street, Millwall, was in a dilapidated condition, and
practically had no fall. New buildings were in course of erection which
it was proposed should be connected to this sewer.
The Borough Surveyor recommended that a pipe sewer be constructed.
Rigden Street.
The Borough Surveyor recommended the opening up of Rigden Street
sewer, and substitution of new pipes for the existing defective brick sewer
which was reported to have collapsed in several places.
Sewer Ventilation, Proposed Shafts Northern Outfall.
The Public Health and Housing Committee on various occasions
called the attention of the London County Council to the nuisance arising
from the open surface ventilators to the northern outfall sewer, and urged
that the construction of tall brick shafts over the ventilators should be
undertaken.
The London County Council Committee replied that they regretted
they were unable to adopt the proposal.
