Thirty-seven deaths (fifteen of which belonged to the Borough of
Poplar) occurred in the Sick Asylum. Three deaths (non-residents)
happened in the Blackwall Sick Asylum.
For death rates see Tables XVIII. and XIX., page 55.
At the end of the year there were 672 entries in the Measles Register
(196 [Poplar, 277 Bromley, and 199 Bow), representing the number of
premises where measles had been stated to have occurred. Upon enquiry
respecting these entries two cases were stated to have recovered, 6 were
found not to be cases, 12 were stated to be suffering from a different
disease other than the one notified, 2 wrong addresses (empty houses and
unknown) were given, and 9 moved away before enquiries could be made.
So that practically as far as is known 643 cases of measles occurred in the
Borough.
Schools.
On December 2nd, 15th and 16th information was received from the
Medical Officer (Education) of the London County Council that instructions
had been sent to the head teachers of Ricardo Street, " Cubitt
Town," and Upper North Street Schools, respectively, to exclude from the
Infants' Departments thereof all unprotected children in Class Rooms A,
C and A, respectively, for certain periods, on account of measles. Offers
of disinfection of the Class Rooms made by the Public Health Department
were declined by the Medical Officer (Education).
Milkshops.
Five cases of measles occurred in connection with milkshops, four
Bromley and one in Bow.
Disinfection and Outworkers.
161 rooms were disinfected by the Public Health Department, and
the remainder were disinfected by the tenants, medical practitioners
giving certificates that disinfection had been satisfactorily carried out.
Respecting outworkers and the articles disinfected by the Council,
see pages 71 and 79.
