Local Government Board, Whitehall, S.W.,
15th November, 1907.
Sir,—I am directed by the Local Government Board to acknowledge
the receipt of your letter of the 5th instant, relative to the adoption of the
Notification of Births Act, 1907, by the Metropolitan Borough Council of
Poplar, and I am to enquire what action it is proposed to take upon the
information of births to be received under the Act, with a view to the
reduction of infant mortality.
I am, Sir,
Your obedient Servant,
JOHN LITHIBY,
Assistant Secretary.
The Town Clerk, Poplar.
It was understood the Local Government Board were not prepared to
confirm the adoption of the Act unless proper provision was made for
utilising the information as to births, required to be given to the Medical
Officer, by means of visitations by a Health Visitor.*.
The salary of a Health Visitor would at present be a charge wholly on
local rates, but the London County Council is proposing to acquire powers
to contribute one half the salaries of such officers.
The Public Health and Housing Committee were of opinion it is
desirable a Health Visitor for the Borough should be appointed, and
recommended—
"That the Council do agree to the principle of the appointment
of a Health Visitor for the Borough, and the Local Government Board
be so informed; that it be referred to the Public Health and Housing
Committee to consider and report as to salary and terms of appointment
of such officer."
Proposed Milk Depots.
The following letter was submitted to the Public Health and Housing
Committee:—
*The Council on the 19th March, 1908, appointed Miss A. E. Hall of Bradford to be
Health Visitor at a commencing salary of £125 per annum.
