Wellington Road sewer. The sewer has only a small fall, and complaints
had been received of the flooding of houses in the road owing to surcharge
of the sewer on several occasions. The Borough Surveyor considered it
was important that access should be provided to the sewer in order that
the sewer might be kept properly cleansed. The Works Committee
recommended—
That five manholes be constructed, by the Borough Surveyor,
to the Wellington Road sewer.
Providence Place Scheme.
The Providence Place Scheme, under the Housing of the Working
Classes Act, provided that the portion of Union Street included in the
scheme should be widened on its west side and extended to Woolmore
Street. The Housing Committee of the London County Council suggested
that the necessary work should be carried out by the Borough Council.
The Works Committee approved the submission of a tender by the Borough
Surveyor for paving works and for sewer construction, which was accepted
by the London County Council, and the Works Committee recommended
that the work be carried out by the Borough Surveyor.
Abolition of Sewer (Messrs. C. & A. Morton).
Messrs. C. & A. Morton were making considerable additions to their
premises (Riverside) on the west side of West Perry Road, and it was
considered by the Borough Surveyor a fitting opportunity for the
demolition of an old sewer belonging to the Council which ran through
the premises, and which had long been the subject of complaint by them
owing to its condition, as well as being the source of considerable expense
to the Council in maintenance and cleansing.
Negotiations were carried out by the Borough Surveyor with Messrs.
Morton, with the result that they were prepared to demolish the existing
defective sewer and reconstruct the drainage system upon their premises,
in accordance with a plan submitted; also to take over the entire ownership
of the system and that already reconstructed by the Council on their
premises on the east side of West Perry Road, thereby relieving the
Council of all subsequent expense and obligation in regard thereto,
subject to certain conditions, upon completion of the work to the
satisfaction of the Borough Surveyor.
The Works Committee approved the demolition of the old sewer on
the premises of Messrs. Morton on the west side of West Ferry Road,
