BROWNING HALL CONFERENCE ON
HOUSING-TRAFFIC BOARD.
GARDEN CITY ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE-HOUSING
REFORM AND
TOWN PLANNING.*
Traffic Board.
Together with Mr. Councillor A. G. Smith, I attended the Browning
Hall Conference on Housing, held at the Westminster Palace Hotel,
April 24th, 1907, when the two following Resolutions were passed —
First Resolution—Moved by Right Hon. Lord Ribblesdale,
Seconded by Right Rev. Lord Bishop of Southwark—
"That this Conference of representatives of the City Corporation,
County Councils, Borough Councils and other local
authorities within the area of Greater London, calls upon His
Majesty's Government to appoint forthwith a Traffic Board on
the lines laid down by the Royal Commission on London
Traffic."
Second Resolution—Moved by Alderman Thompson, Seconded
by Right Hon. Charles Booth—
"That this Conference is of opinion that the present haphazard
and unsatisfactory manner in which new districts are
being now developed can be largely remedied if it be laid down
as one of the duties of the Traffic Board to take the necessary
steps for advising upon intelligent and comprehensive schemes
of Town Planning."
* Whilst this report is being written a Bill on Housing, Town Planning, etc. has
been presented to the House of Commons by Mr. Burns, supported by the Attorney
General, The Lord Advocate and Dr. Maenamara. The Bill is to amend the Law
relating to the Housing of the Working Classes, to provide for the making of Town
planning schemes and to make further provision with respect to the appointment
of County Medical Officers of Health.
