Coroner's Court and Mortuary Accommodation.
The question of the provision of suitable mortuary accommodation
in connection with a coroner's court for the Borough, which has been
under consideration during the past 15 years, has now reached a position
in which there is every prospect of the present unsatisfactory arrangements
being very shortly discarded and a suitable mortuary and coroner's
court provided.
An agreement has been arrived at for the sale by the Borough
Council to the London County Council of a portion of a site in Cottage
Street and High Street, Poplar, for the erection of a coroner's court, the
remainder of the site being utilised by the Borough Council for provision
thereon of a mortuary and post-mortem room. The site was originally
acquired by the District Board of Works in 1895 for erection of a
coroner's court, mortuary and shelters, the court to be let on lease to
the London County Council, but owing to the heavy capital expenditure
involved, the inadequate rental offered by the London County Council
for the court, and to the fact that other buildings had become available
for the holding of the coroner's inquiries, the proposal was abandoned
by the first Borough Council.
