Borough.
Through the Medical Officer of the London County Council,
information was received respecting a person proceeding to the
Poplar Borough out of the s.s. "Claverdon" from Rio-de-Janeiro.
At the address given the person was not known.
PUERPERAL FEVER.
Fifteen cases of puerperal fever were notified, nine Poplar, four
Bromley, and two Bow. Four cases were treated in the Sick
Asylum, two in the London Hospital and one at St. Bartholomew's
Hospital. Of the four cases treated in the Sick Asylum one case
was notified as occurring in that institution, one in the Poplar
Union Workhouse, and the other two were admitted from the
Parish of Poplar. The two London Hospital cases were admitted
from Poplar Parish, and the St. Bartholomew's case from the
Parish of Bromley.
Five deaths occurred from puerperal fever. Three Poplar, one
Bromley and one Bow.
Upon receipt of a notification of puerperal fever, the medical
attendant is forthwith communicated with, requesting him to warn
the attendants and midwife (if there be one), as to the dangerous
infectious nature of the disease. The midwife (if there be one)
and the attendants are immediately interviewed, and written to,
warning them neither to attend nor go near any confinement case until
some weeks have elapsed, and then only after they have had their
clothes disinfected, which will be carried out by the Sanitary
Authority for the district in which they reside. Should the midwife
(if there be one), and the attendants reside out of the Borough,
the facts are made known to the Medical Officer of Health of the
district in which they reside.
