The drainage of many premises has also been repaired and made
sound.
With regard to Johnson's Buildings in Kerby Street, I had, at
times, noticed bad smells when inspecting the premises, and as
the smells seemed to be intermittent I resolved to make a thorough
examination of the drainage and soil pipes, etc. The first tests
gave somewhat unsatisfactory results, so, in company with the
owner, I again tested the whole, and succeeded in convincing the
owner it was desirable and necessary for a thorough reconstruction
of the system to be put in hand. The soil pipes were of earthenware
and were fixed internally, and were cracked in three places,
allowing bad smells to be blown about the rooms in times of strong
down draughts, and the drain had dropped at the foot of soil
pipes under the floors, causing serious defects.
The small wing of the buildings will be overhauled in the forthcoming
year.
In accordance with the arrangements made with the Surveyor s
Department concerning drainage work on new buildings, I have
been present at the different jobs in my district as occasions arose,
with the inspector of works, when the drainage was under test.
