The Committee recommended the Council's sewer to be extended
to take the drainage of Lock Cottages, and the owners to be
required to drain the Cottages into the sewer.
The extension of the Bridge Road sewer for a distance of about
90 feet to take the drainage of Messrs. Lamb, Beal and Co.'s
premises, was approved by the Council. The Borough Surveyor
reported that it was desirable the extension be made in 24-inch
pipes, instead of 9-inch as originally proposed, in order that the
sewer may form an emergency reservoir in case of any temporary
difficulty in connection with the sewage lift.
The Borough Surveyor reported that the sewers in Ashton Street
and Woolmore Street were in a very defective condition, and that
Ashton Street sewer is at too high a level to efficiently drain that
street. The Surveyor proposed to reconstruct the sewer in Ashton
Street with about 430 feet of 12-inch pipes and Woolmore Street
615 feet of 12-inch pipes, with the necessary manholes and a ventilating
shaft in each case.
The Committee recommended the Council that the sewers in
Ashton Street and Woolmore Street be reconstructeH by the Borough
Surveyor in accordance with his plans.
The Committee had under consideration the requirement of the
London and India Docks Co. that the Council should periodically
remove the soil from the cesspit of a privy at the Lockkeeper's
Cottage at the Limehouse entrance to the South-West India Dock.
The premises were too far from the Council's sewer for the Council
to require the Company to connect to it, and the Borough Surveyor
advised the Committee it would be much less costly for the Council
to incur the necessary expenditure on the work than to carry out
the removal of the soil.
The Committee recommended the Council that a 6-inch pipe be
laid from the Lock-keeper's Cottage at the Limehouse entrance
to the South-West India Docks.
