Tuberculosis was that when any part of a pig is tuberculous the
whole carcase should be destroyed.
At present the law stands as follows:
Public Health (London) Act, 1891.
SECTION 47. (1) the proof that the same
was not exposed or deposited for any such purpose or was not
intended for the food of man, resting with the person charged;
(3) Where it is shown that any article liable to be seized under
this section, and found in the possession of any person was purchased
by him from another person for the food of man, and
when so purchased was in such a condition as 10 be liable to be
seized and condemned under this section, the person who so sold
the same shall be liable to the fine and imprisonment above mentioned,
unless he proves that at the time he sold the said article
he did not know, and had no reason to believe, that it was in
such condition.
(8) Where a person has in his possession any article which is
unsound op unwholesome or unfit for the food of man, he may, by
written notice to the sanitary authority, specifying such article, and
containing a sufficient identification of it, request its removal, and
the sanitary authority shall cause it to be removed as if it were
trade refuse.
This last subjection clearly shows that; a butcher should
examine all his meat immediately upon arrival at his premises, and
put on one side any which is diseased or unsound, or unwholesome,
or unfit for the food of man, and should not run the risk
of an officer of a sanitary authority doing it for him, and further,
taking such steps as the law empowers the officer to do.
It was suggested to the Committee that they recommend the
Council to ask the London County Council to oppose any such
alteration in the law as the question is one which affects the whole
of London, and in fact, the country generally. It was also suggested
that the attention of the Borough's Members of Parliament
might also be called to the matter.
