The shops and stalls in my district have been regularly inspected
with a view of detecting unsound and unwholesome food, and in
several instances quantities of fish, meat, etc., have been destroyed
with the consent of the vendors; also frequently, through the
year, a number of cases of fish and fruit have been brought to the
Public Health Office by tradespeople and costermongers, who
have found on arriving home from the market the contents of the
cases were unfit for food of man. The articles of food were destroyed
and the usual certificate given, and with one exception the money
has been returned by the wholesale vendors.
Under the Public Health (London) Act, 1891, Police Court
proceedings have been instituted against the owners of the undermentioned
premises for disobeying the " Notice " of the Council,
with the following results:—
12, Benledi Street. Defective drains—14 days' abatement
order with £1 12s. 6d. costs.
36, Abbott Road. Defective drains—21 days' abatement
order with £1 5s. costs.
18, Dee Street. Case of overcrowding in front room, first
floor. Defendant was on the second hearing sent to prison
for 20 days ; full particulars of this case were reported to
your committee.
