Canal Boats Acts.
The inspection of canal boats has been carried out as opportunities
have occurred. The registered " boats " trade principally
to and from Messrs. Grindly and Co.'s Tar Works on the outside
between Limehouse and Bromley. The pumps and bulkheads
have frequently been inspected, and inquiry made as to any overcrowding
of the cabins, but no fault has been found to exist in this
respect, and the cabins are usually clean and wholesome. In one
instance, however, I had occasion to serve the owners with a " notice"
to put the fore cabin of the " Stort " in a habitable condition. The
" boat" was laid up for a thorough overhaul forthwith, and on
the resumption of her voyages was found to be in first-class condition.
One certificate of registration has had to be renewed
owing to old one being in such a torn and dirty condition. No case
of infectious disease has occurred on any canal boat in my district
during the year.
Infringement of Bye-Laws.
In all cases where drainage work or new pans and traps have
been fixed without any notice being given as required, and the same
have come under my notice, I have reported the fact to the Public
Health Committee, and the ground has been opened up for inspection
and testing, and in some cases where defects were found to
exist these have been remedied.
The two blocks of tenement dwellings in the district have been
inspected twice during the year, and some improvements as to
W.C.'s and open spaces, etc., have been carried out.
I am, Sir,
Your obedient servant,
JOSEPH JOHNSON,
R.P.C., Assoc. San. Inst.
Sanitary Inspector and Inspector under Sale of
Food and Drugs and Canal Boats Acts.
