Special Proceedings.
166 East India Dock Road. On the 14th December legal proceedings
were taken under the 12th section Public Health (London)
Act, 1891, for the abatement of an urgent nuisance; drain opened
and found defective in the workshop; as a matter of emergency the
summons was made returnable for the 17th inst.; abatement order
made to execute the work within 21 days, with £1 12s. 6d. costs.
On the 5th May, whilst inspecting the shops and stalls in Chrisp
Street, my attention was drawn to a man selling preserved bananas
at id. per bag, from a barrow. I had two bags purchased, and on
examining them found them unfit for food of man. I then told the
vendor it was my intention to seize them and have them condemned
by a magistrate, which was accordingly done ; there were 40 bags
and 3 boxes. I invited the vendor to be in attendance at the Police
Court on the 7th inst., and he appeared on that date. Mr. Mead,
the presiding magistrate, made an order for the bananas to be
destroyed, and granted a summons which was heard on the 6th of
June, when defendant was fined £2 and 2s. costs.
Since the death of the Inspector of Nuisances in manufactories,
bakehouses, &c., the whole of the bakehouses in my district have
been inspected. Intimations and notices were served where cleansing
was required and sanitary defects existed, and in each case the work
was executed.
Smoke Nuisances from Factories, &c.
In every instance where a nuisance has occurred, either on complaint
or from personal observation, notices have been served and
the nuisances abated for the time being.
The whole of the schools in my district have been inspected and
where cleansing was required and sanitary defects existed, notices
were served and the nuisances abated.
