One hundred swabbings from throats of doubtful cases of
diphtheria were forwarded for bacteriological examination to the
Jenner Institute of Preventive Medicine. The bacillus diphtherioe
was isolated in 43 instances, and the pseudo diphtheritic bacillus in
3 cases. See page 28 as to cases of diphtheria admitted into
Metropolitan Asylums Board's Hospitals which were certified as not
having the complaint.
No deductions have been made in respect of these patients.
The 316 cases in Poplar were notified from 255 premises, and the
238 cases in Bromley from 201 premises.
Unfortunately a very large number of cases of diphtheria and
scarlet fever occurred upon the Isle of Dogs at the end of the year.
The diphtheria cases were nearly all centred round the St. John's
