Typhoid Fever.—The outbreak of Typhoid Fever in Aberdeen,
which has been fully described in the general press, resulted in considerable
work to this department on instructions received from the
Ministry of Health. The Public Health Inspectors visited no less
than 600 premises where tinned corned beef and tongue was sold to
ascertain whether certain brands specified by the Ministry were in
their possession. As a result 59 tins of corned beef were referred
back to the wholesalers by the retailers; a procedure directed by
the Ministry.

Tuberculosis.—The ward distribution of the cases of tuberculosis notified during 1964 is as follows:—

There were 8 deaths from respiratory tuberculosis and 1
from other forms of tuberculosis during the year.
Visiting.—The investigation of cases of food poisoning are
made by the Food Inspector ; and the London County Council
Health Visitors visit cases of puerperal pyrexia, ophthalmia neonatorum,
infective enteritis and tuberculosis.
The two Borough Council Visitors investigate all other cases of
infectious disease (in addition to their work in connection with
elderly people which is reported under "Care of the Aged") and
during the year they made 574 (829) visits in the course of these
investigations.
Bacteriological examinations.—The number of examinations
made in connection with infectious disease was 166 (329).
International certificates.—During the year 2,147 (2,648) certificates
of inoculation or vaccination were submitted by persons
travelling abroad for the authentication of the signature of the
medical practitioner concerned. This authentication is required
under the World Health Organisation agreement.
