naturally constantly devoting my efforts to ensure that the widest
publicity is given in an attempt to prevent house purchase without
sufficient expert advice. In this the Borough Council have played a
most useful part, not only by their supporting the efforts of the
Citizens' Advice Bureau, but by sympathetic consideration of applications
for mortgages.
I have been able to enlist the co-operation of some Personnel
and Welfare Officers in industry who have agreed to draw the
attention of their workers to the dangers of embarking on house
purchase without professional advice. This I hope will be extended.
A moment's reflection will suffice to recognise that a conscious
effort must be made by every one concerned to achieve assimilation,
but by far the greater effort has to be made by the newcomer who
has to make considerable adjustments in so many ways before he is
wholly accepted into the community. Adjustments even have to be
made by a Londoner who goes to live in a small isolated village.
On the other hand so much depends on the attitude and enlightenment
of the people already established in the Borough.
In this respect I would like to pay tribute to the unfailing help
of officials of the London County Council, Citizens' Advice Bureau,
Hospital Staff, Police Force and of course, members of our own
Town Hall and Public Health Staff.
