Mass Radiography.—I have obtained the permission of Dr.
Mikhail, the Medical Director of the Mass Radiography Unit 5 B,
to include the following extracts from his 1955 report:—
"The area covered by this Unit comprises the boroughs of
Paddington, St. Marylebone, Holborn, St. Pancras, Hampstead,
Finchley, Friern Barnet, Southgate, Hendon and Edgware. The
present policy of the Unit is to cover the territory as frequently as
possible, X-raying firms and offices as near as possible to their
doorstep ... It has now been found practical for the Unit to
move three or four times a day comfortably and X-ray 300 people:
twice a day and X-ray 450, and once a day and X-ray 540 . . .
The mobile Mass X-ray Unit is purely a diagnostic centre for
non-symptomatic individuals. The mobile mass X-ray Unit should
concentrate on those groups of people who would not, or could not,
easily avail themselves of any other form of free chest X-ray . . .
Very little time was spent by the Unit in Paddington during the
year, except for special request surveys. It is proposed to try and
cover this area much more extensively during the next year: with
special reference to some open general public sessions which have
not been previously held in the borough."
During the year 1955, 4,012 persons were X-rayed in
Paddington. The analysis of significant tuberculosis discovered was
as follows:—
Active tuberculosis 3
Occasional supervision 9
During 1956, 4,326 people were X-rayed. The significant
