FOOD SUPERVISION.
Slaughterhouses.—There is one slaughterhouse within the Borough, at 275, Edgware Road.
Three hundred and twenty-two inspections were made during the year. The number of animals
slaughtered was 2,868, comprising 200 bullocks and 2,668 sheep, an increase of 418 sheep as compared
with 1937.

Slaughter of Animals Act, 1933.—The purpose of this Act is to provide for the humane and
painless slaughter of animals and for the licensing of slaughtermen. Licences are held by four
slaughtermen who follow that occupation in the Borough.
Public Health (Meat) Regulations, 1924.—It was not found necessary to take any legal proceedings
under these Regulations during the year. Occasional defaults were dealt with by means of a caution.
Unsound Food.—No legal proceedings were taken under section 180 of the Public Health (London)
Act, 1936, in respect of unsound food.
Food Purveyors.—At the end of the year there were 999 purveyors of food in the Borough,
classified as follows :—Butchers 66, Fishmongers 30, General 74, Grocers 149, Fried Fish 32, Refreshments
157, Confectioners 173, Greengrocers 96, Milk 133, Provision 89.
In addition to the above, there were at the end of 1938, 56 licensed Street Traders selling food
within the borough, namely :—Fruit and Vegetables 39, Ice Cream 7, Light Refreshments 9, Fish 1.
These, with the storage premises of some 20 Street Traders licensed by other boroughs, are under
constant supervision.
There were 7 premises on which fish curing was performed, this business, as well as fish frying,
being regulated by special bye-laws.
The number of visits of inspection paid to premises occupied by food purveyors was 4,873.
Section 187 of the Public Health (London) Act, 1936, provides that any premises (other than
premises used as a club, hotel or restaurant) used or proposed to be used for the preparation, or
manufacture of sausages, potted, pressed, pickled or preserved meat, fish or other food intended for
sale shall be registered by the owner or occupier, or intending occupier thereof with the sanitary
authority. At the close of the year the Register contained the addresses of 92 premises.
Ice Cream.—There were 189 shops at which ice cream was known to be sold, comprising the
following kinds of businesses :—Bakers 2, General 25, Milk 21, Confectioners 75, Refreshment 39,
Wholesale 3, Newsagents 20, Greengrocers 2, Fancy Goods 2. Three hundred and twenty inspections
of premises were made.
Ice cream was sold from 35 barrows stored within the Borough and from some 40 barrows stored
outside the Borough.
The above-quoted section of the Public Health (London) Act, 1936, also makes it necessary for
the owner or occupier to register with the sanitary authority any premises used or proposed to be
used for the sale or the manufacture for the purpose of sale of ice cream or other similar commodity
or the storage of ice cream or other similar commodity intended for sale. At the end of 1938, there
were 163 entries in the Register.
Food Destroyed.—The total weight of food surrendered by tradesmen and dealers for destruction
by the Council was 2 tons, 6 cwt., 1 qtr., 24 lbs., comprising the following varieties : Meat and
offal, 4,206 lbs. ; poultry, 256 lbs. ; vegetables, 18 lbs. ; fish, 718 lbs.; and tinned meat, 6 lbs.
