The Committee met on 12 occasions during the year and two hundred and twenty-eight
individual cases were considered.
Residential treatment was granted by the London County Council to 246 patients, 22 of whom
were children under the age of 16 years, and 23 children were boarded out under the Tuberculosis
Contact Scheme.
No funds are available in the hands of the Committee for the assistance of patients, but in
several instances help was obtained from voluntary agencies.
DISPENSARY TREATMENT OF TUBERCULOSIS.
For administrative purposes the Borough is divided into two dispensary areas, the line of
division passing down Inverness Terrace, Porchester Road, Lord Hill's Road, Formosa Street to its
junction with Shirland Road, and Shirland Road to its junction with Kilburn Park Road. The
portion of the Borough to the east of this line is served by the St. Mary's Hospital Dispensary, and
the portion to the west of the line by the Paddington Tuberculosis Dispensary.
Paddington Tuberculosis Dispensary, 20, Talbot Road.
This is a voluntary agency supported by voluntary subscriptions, and a grant from the
Paddington Borough Council which for the financial year 1938/9 mounted to £1,600.
Dr. R. S. Walker, Tuberculosis Officer, reports as follows:—
The X-ray department of the Dispensary again worked to full capacity, 405 examinations
being made. No difficulty is experienced in persuading people attending the Dispensary to
submit to this examination, and its importance in aiding early diagnosis is universally acknowledged.
The artificial sunlight department was again open during the winter months, and the results
of this form of treatment on delicate children continued to be most encouraging.
Students from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine attending the Dispensary
for lectures and demonstrations numbered sixty-five, and seven students from the College of
Nursing, Battersea Polytechnic and Bedford College attended for training in Tuberculosis work.
The late Lady Philip transferred to the Dispensary Trustees a piece of land in Newton
Road as a site for a new Dispensary, and early in the New Year work commenced on the erection
of the building. It is hoped that this will be ready for occupation before the publication of the
next Annual Report.
