RELAPSING FEVER, TYPHUS FEVER.
Thirty-two cases of dysentery were notified during 1938; but there were no cases of the other
diseases included in the heading.
WHOOPING-COUGH.
This disease became notifiable on the 1st October, 1938, under the same Regulations and
conditions applicable to measles, as described on page 21 of this Report. The number of notifications
received up to the end of the year was 104, and 23 of the cases received hospital treatment.
In 1938, 3 children died of whooping-cough, all being under the age of 5 years. The numbers
of deaths in 1937 and 1936 were 6 and 3 respectively.
No cases were referred to the District Nursing Association during the year.
FOOD POISONING.
Section 182 of the Public Health (London) Act, 1936, requires medical practitioners to notify
cases of food poisoning or suspected food poisoning. During 1938, 31 cases of illness, suspected to
have been caused by food poisoning, were notified in the Borough. In no case was action considered
necessary as regards the source of the food supply. In most of the cases there was no doubt that the
illness was not " food-poisoning," but was due to personal idiosyncrasy or to the results of some
dietetic indiscretion.
CANCER.
Cancer is now one of the commonest causes of death. Two hundred and sixty-nine deaths
occurred among Paddington residents during the year.
