Hospital Accommodation.—The restriction, which was in force at the beginning of the year,
on the admission of cases of scarlet fever, measles and dysentery to the infectious diseases hospitals
of the London County Council was removed on the 16th May, 1938.
A supply of anti-streptococcal (scarlet fever) serum is now provided by the Council for the
use of patients suffering from Scarlet Fever who are unable to obtain it through the National Health
Insurance Scheme or through other sources, and are not in a position to pay for it. During the
year 2 phials of serum, each of 10 c.c., were supplied.
SCARLET FEVER.
During 1938 there were 195 cases of scarlet fever notified. The sex-age distribution of these
cases is shown in Table A above.
Of the 195 cases, 167 were removed to Isolation Hospitals. The remaining cases were treated
at home, proper facilities being available for isolation and treatment. No death from this disease
occurred during the year.
Seasonal Prevalence.—The following table shows the number of cases notified in each fourweekly
period during 1938.
