MARRIAGES.
According to provisional figures supplied by the Registrar-General 1,919 marriages were
solemnized in the Borough during 1938, being a rate of 27.8 persons per 1,000 of the population.
BIRTHS.
The number of births registered in the Borough during 1938 was 2,069. From this total it
is necessary to deduct 660 births which occurred to residents of other localities, and to add 479
births which occurred to Paddington residents outside the Borough. The corrected total of 1,888
births thus obtained is equal to a rate of 13.74 per 1,000 of the population.
Of the 1,888 births, 993 were those of males and 895 those of females, and of these 144 males
and 124 females were illegitimate.
The following table shows the birth-rate during each of the last six years in England and Wales, in London, in Paddington and in each of the wards of the Borough:—

Illegitimate Births.—These were 268 in number, or 14.19 per cent. of the total number of
live births. The proportion of illegitimate births varies remarkably in the different wards as is
shown in the table below

Stillbirths.—During 1938, 74 stillbirths, assignable to the Borough, were registered in
accordance with the provisions of the Births and Deaths Registration Act, 1926, equivalent to
3.7 per cent. of the total births recorded. Of the 74 stillbirths, males numbered 38 and females 36,
five of the males and 7 of the females being illegitimate.
