Section 5 of the London County Council (General Powers) Act, 1932, provides that any premises
(other than premises used as a club, hotel or restaurant) used or proposed to be used for the preparation
or manufacture of sausages, potted, pressed, pickled or preserved meat, fish or other food intended
for sale shall be registered by the owner or occupier, or intending occupier, thereof with the sanitary
authority. At the close of the year the Register contained the addresses of 155 premises.
Ice Cream.—There were 178 shops at which ice cream was known to be sold, comprising the
following kinds of businessesBakers 9, General 26, Milk 12, Confectioners 79, Refreshment 44,
Wholesale 4, Newsagents 2, Greengrocer 1, Fancy Goods 1.
One hundred and sixty-one (161) inspections of premises were made.
Ice cream was sold from 27 barrows stored within the Borough and from some 30 barrows stored
outside the Borough.
The above-quoted section of the London County Council (General Powers) Act, 1930, also makes
it necessary for the owner or occupier to register with the sanitary authority any premises used or
proposed to be used for the sale or the manufacture for the purpose of sale of ice cream or other
similar commodity or the storage of ice cream or other similar commodity intended for sale. At
the end of 1934 there were 148 entries in the Register.
Food Destroyed.—The total weight of food surrendered by tradesmen and dealers for destruction
by the Council was 4 tons 10 cwts. 3 qrs 3 lbs., comprising the following varieties:—Meat and Offal,
3,058 lbs. ; Fish, 242 lbs. ; Bacon, 150 lbs. ; Tinned Goods, 4,256 lbs. ; Poultry, 24 lbs. ; Fruit,
2,352 lbs. ; Jellies (30 packets), 15 lbs.; Cauliflower, 10 lbs. ; Lobster, 60 lbs.
Dairies and Milkshofs.—At the end of the year 1933 there were 127 names on the Register.
During the year 1934 3 names were added and 2 removed, making a total of 128.
Twelve of these businesses were transferred to new proprietors. There were 333 inspections made.
In addition to the above-mentioned, there are 31 persons registered as purveyors of milk
whose premises are situated in other districts but who come into the Borough to trade.
Sterilised milk in bottles was found to be on sale at 100 premises.
Milk (Special Designations) Order, 1923.
The licences issued by the Council during the year in pursuance of this Order numbered 109,
but of these 7 were issued consequent upon changes of ownership of businesses. The number of
licences in force at the end of the year was 102, comprising 10 for "Certified" milk, 29 for "Grade
A (Tuberculin Tested)" milk, 3 for "Grade A (Pasteurised)" milk, and 61 for "Pasteurised" milk
The licences in respect of "Grade A (Tuberculin Tested)" milk included one for a bottling establishment
and those in respect of "Pasteurised" milk, 2 for pasteurising establishments.
The samples taken by the Council's Inspector numbered 33, comprising 10 of "Certified" milk,
and 23 of "Pasteurised" milk. The samples included 9 of "Pasteurised" milk taken at Paddington
Hospital, and 2 of "Pasteurised" milk taken at Schools.
Three samples of ' 'Certified'' milk were reported not to comply with the appropriate bacteriological
standards. A communication was addressed to the vendors concerned.
Milk and Dairies Order, 1926.
No contraventions of the provisions of this Order were reported during the year.
Food and Drugs (Adulteration) Act, 1928.
Of the 600 samples taken during the year, 15 (2.5 per cent.) were found to be "not of the nature,
or not of the substance, or not of the quality demanded by the purchaser."
This compares with 3.1 per cent. in 1933 and 3.0 per cent, in 1932.
Thirty-five of the samples were taken on Sundays and Bank Holidays. All were reported to be
genuine.
Fifteen samples of milk and 4 of skimmed milk were taken at Paddington Station on delivery by
rail. All were reported to be genuine.
Fifteen samples of milk were obtained at Paddington Station at the request of other Boroughs.
