At the end of 1933 there were 986 premises on the Register. During 1934, 38 premises were removed
from the Register and 53 added, making the total at the end of the year 1,001.
The Department reported to the Home Office 7 cases in which the prescribed abstract of the
Factory and Workshop Act, 1901, was not displayed, and received from that Office notice of 11 workshops,
4 of which were already known to the Department.
Homework (Outworkers).—Local employers of outworkers sent in 16 lists in February and 16
in August. These lists contained 220 names and addresses of which 175 were forwarded to other
districts. From other districts 258 addresses within the Borough were received.
No instances were discovered during the year of outwork being carried on in unwholesome premises
(Section 108).
Supervision.—There were during the year 1,613 inspections, comprising 811 of factories, 585
of workshops and 217 of workplaces.
There were 168 nuisances or defects found upon registered premises, all of which were remedied
during the year, the majority being remedied on verbal request. The defects found are shown in the

At 3 premises underground bakehouses were found to be in use, contrary to the provisions of

the baking could be done on the ground floor, whilst in the remaining case legal proceedings were

The bakehouses were inspected on 596 occasions during the year.
